Since its establishment in 2017, Mama Aleta Fund (MAF) has been dedicated to finding and supporting women who share the same spirit of struggle as Aleta Baun, the founder and initiator of MAF. Aleta Baun is known as a resilient woman fighting for the environment and the rights of indigenous communities. Through MAF, her legacy continues with a special program called Nausus, which provides support to women in Eastern Indonesia who are actively fighting to protect their environment and livelihoods within their communities.
The Nausus program not only assists these women in facing environmental threats but also aims to strengthen their leadership, advocacy, and empowerment capacities. MAF is committed to supporting women who play a critical role in preserving ecological balance and empowering local communities to be self-sufficient and sovereign over their natural resources.
The following photostory illustrates the early steps taken by Mama Aleta Fund to support socio-ecological female defenders across the country, while also working towards organizational self-reliance. With the support from MAF, these women can continue their struggle to protect the land, water, and forests that are vital to their communities’ survival.
